Brief Introduction of Professor Shi Jin
(英文简介)
Prof. Shi Jin is currently the director of Institute of Natural Sciences, a Chair Professor of School of Mathematical Sciences, in Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He also serves as a co-director of the Shanghai National Center for Applied Mathematics. Prof. Jin got his bachelor degree from Peking University in 1983, and PhD degree from University of Arizona in 1991. He did his post-doc research work at the Courant Institute and then joined Georgia Institute of Technology as an Assistant Professor. Between 2000 and 2018, he was a full professor (and later the Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor) in the Department of Mathematics at University of Wisconsin-Madison, and serving as the department chair for three years.
Prof. Jin's main research interests include the computational methods and analysis in fluid mechanics, hyperbolic conservation laws, kinetic theory, quantum dynamics, interacting particle systems, and multiscale problems. He has done many influential research works in these fields. He is well known for his research in asymptotic preserving schemes for multiscale problems and the relaxation approximation for hyperbolic conservation laws, which led to new research directions in the past decades. He has supervised 25 PhD students, and many of them are working in world-class universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of Minnesota, etc. Some of his former students won prestigious awards such as the Sloan Fellowship and US NSF CAREER Awards and national awards for young researchers in China.
Due to these outstanding achievements, Prof. Jin has been awarded the Feng Kang prize from Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Distinguished Overseas Young Scientist Award from National Science Foundation of China. He was an Invited Speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2018. He was elected a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society, a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and a Fellow of China Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics. In 2011, he was elected a Foreign Member of Academia Europaea-Academy of Europe, and a fellow of European Academy of Sciences.
